"I'd Go Crazy" kicks the living sh*t out of "Crazy"

Posted by Menlo Park Rat

Ok, I've been meaning to mention this for a while....ever since I got the old albums a few months back...

Anyway, "Crazy" is and was one of my favorite songs off of The Madding Crowd, so I was instantly intrigued when I found out that the track appeared in a different form on one of the earlier records.

Now, you know how it is when you hear a song (a demo or a live song)...fall in love with it a certain way and then not really care as much for the final version because it's different from the way you first heard it? You get kinda biased, to a degree.

Well, I obviously heard "Crazy" many many times before I finally heard "I'd Go Crazy", and I already loved the song, but...I must say....the older version is far superior in most every way.

The intro riff is sooo much cooler and rocking, the guitar througout the song is better, there is a bit of a different bass line in parts that is great, and the solo is fucking awesome. There are parts of the melody that I still prefer in "Crazy", but that's probably just because I heard that version first.

I wish they wouldn't have changed it up so much for The Madding Crowd. The original verion is better...and remember, this is coming from a non-biased point of view, since I heard "Crazy" first.

Sooo....does anybody feel the same way about this song?

Edit: John, why does this board censor posts? I wouldn't think that's something you're into.

No more comments/replies to this thread, one that actually discusses detailed aspects of the *music*, while "john's long hair" remains at the top of the page.

How sad.

no, dont feel that way!!!

its just that this kind of stuff gets discussed so much, most of the regulars get sick of posting the same opinions over and over.

despite recent appearances, its all about the music.

its the music that unites us initially, but its the nonsense that keeps us comming back day after day. refreshing minute after minute...

rock on.

Man, I am like completely on the other side of the spectrum on this. I think "Crazy" is much better. Sounds more like something to listen to on a dark and rainy day. I like how it starts with the drums, too, and the drums are kinda funky. I'm listening to "I'd Go Crazy" right now, and yeah, the drums and bass are much more regular than in "Crazy." yeah, I like how irregular the bass and drums in "Crazy" are, and I dunno, I just like the format better too.

Yeah... probably because it sounds more differen't and out of the ordinary then the other "version."

And to the dude/ tte that started this thread/ topic, you really shouldn't get upset about about people talking "off-topic." No matter how much you rant and rave and specifically say: JUST ANSWER MY QUESTION people are still gonna mention or talk about some of the wall stuff.

It's just how most humans are and guess what, humans are responding to your thread.

Do you like cheese burgers?

I like both.... I don't know which one I like more (I'd have to listen to them back to back and right now I'm to lazy to do that, I've already got a CD in my comp) anyhow... Sorry we always get off topic, but onsongglory is right... we are here like 5 hours a day and get bored of reading the same messages and someone will just metion something that spawns off into something entirely else and well... we just let it go. But sorry.

And I don't like cheeseburgers... I'm a vegetarian!

Rock-on.Colleen.

Humans responding to my thread, huh? I would have never have guessed it.

Umm, I never said it was "wrong" to go off topic.

I moderate two large message boards for another band, so...yeah, I know how things go.

It was just a bit disheartening that no one responded to a thread genuinely about the music. I didn't want to "force someone to answer my question"...if you don't want to respond, don't. But, it really wasn't even a question, just an observation to spark some discussion and see how everyone else felt - I thought that's what these forums were all about.

Oh, and...I like cheeseburgers.

Brian - looks like you've got a sense of humor about it at least! smiling smiley And yeah I think I'm human (if you're talking about me) at least that's what my parents keep telling me...

Sometime today I'm gonna listen to those two songs and write up a comparison, or at least my opinion, because now I can't stop thinking about it.

Rock-on.Colleen.

Damn right they are Brian and you moderators are never going to take that away from me you understand?!?

I'll never be like you Brian.. neverrrr..

Yes,,

that is summer.....
Hmm... Well, I have listened to them both a couple times... Here is what I have to say.

1. In "Crazy" the drum intro is just spectacular! I really like the off-beatedness of it... I think the intro is pretty long, but I like it better than the "I'd Go Crazy" intro.
2. There is a killer solo in "I'd Go Crazy" that I wish was in "Crazy" (I really didn't pay attention to figure out if it was a guitar or saxophone, but it really sounded like a... harmonica but I don't know for sure)
3. "Crazy" has more of an indie feel to it, more rough and what not, while "I'd Go Crazy" sounds more like the professional studio song...

I still don't have one that I would prefer "more" than the other one. It just depends on the mood that I'm in I guess... Maybe a favorite will develop now that I am consciously thinking about it!

Rock.on.Collen.

I've only heard the old version once as I only just downloaded it. It was obviously a great song.
As of this minute though, I prefer Crazy still. It just seems to have a better feel to it, to me anyway.
The other thing is...I love the sound of that, what seems to be, a pedal steel guitar at the end of Crazy. Cool sound and that is what tips the scales for me!
Ok...

I'm not dissing Crazy. I really really like it as well. It's just that the songs are so different...completely different *feels* to them. The broken chords and the other quirky aspects to Crazy's intro are cool...and it fits with that cut of the song.

I guess I just feel dissapointed that the awesome I'd Go Crazy riff and solo were completely lost in the transition process. They *deserve* to be somewhere.

*shrug*

It's like that old (?) saying: In with the new and out with the old. It doesn't always apply but maybe it does this time.

Good on ya Brian; well said old chap.

The British are rubbing off on me; I think.
