Once when I was visiting the Met.,and walking around the building on the park side--the area where the glass triangle conservatory is---
I saw and nearly ran right into the great Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan!
He had on a tweed fedora(!) and a tweed jacket with elbow patches I think theyre called...?
That hair! The bow tie!! The twinkle in his eyes!! Unmistakeable.
He had binoculars around his neck and a huge smile on his face, just pure enjoyment.
.....It was one of those georgeous ,imperceptibly perfect first Spring days and you could feel that free crazy joy in everyone in the park, the museum...
Maybe he was touring the area in his preservation work, but you could see, also just visiting and enjoying you know?
and I like to imagine, cause its soo perfectly sweet, maybe doing a little bird watching too!!!! too fuuunnnyyy.
What a great man.What a great American.
He served consecutively under 4 presidents,he NEVER traded his ideals.
He transformed lives in New York and lives in all America for the better.
He led the war on poverty with Kennedy, then Johnson, and after their deaths,NEVER gave it up.
He restored abandoned buildings, empty schools, neglected neighborhoods...
MY people,
MY places.
He made headway to infiltrate and eliminate ghettos,AND restored Pennsylvania Ave.
He was born in Hells Kitchen--just like my Grparents and parents.
And maybe yours too?
When George the first was playing dirty games in his Skull and Cross Bones frat house, Daniel Moynihan was shining shoes to help support his family.
How's THAT for "up from the boot straps"?
He was a great Public Servant for 24 yrs in the Senate,
he was an intellectual, earned 2 Masters,1 Law degree and a PhD.,
wrote like 18 books--the man wrote more books than Jeb Bush has READ.
He was a teacher,a dirty ,filthy bleeding heart Liberal and a Navy Vet.
This is an American .The kind of great men only we can make.
And just how much do we need them now ?
God Bless and thank you ,DPM!!!!!!!!!!
