An MLS team can afford to pay a guy a million a week? Seriously?

$400,000 of his salary is paid by the league (the league pays all player salaries, not individual teams). Only this $400,000 counts against the salary cap, as part of the "Designated Player Rule", which allows teams to pay a player more than $400,000, but only that $400K counts against the cap.

$9 million per year will be paid by the Antshutz Entertainment Group, the company who owns the Los Angeles Galaxy.

$40 million + will be from his "imaging" rights and all that fancy marketing for people such as adidas.

He's not the same but he's 31 years old coming to the largest untapped resource for football in the world and will instantly be the best player here.

I think it's a great day for the sport in this country. An icon that people will recognize better than anyone since Pele in the NASL, and MLS is handling it with much more control, too.

this brings the mls much exposure.
i think galaxy and the mls should thank their lucky stars.
