Your right.. Im' quick to assumtions over genres... let me rephrase myself then.. From waht I've heard, the genre of pop, and rap... are umm not so much artists as singers?

and about the beatles thing, they weren't really pop, they were mainstearm and at least played their own insturments..

>>>Sure some can sing, but theirs more then that being an artist, oh I dunno maybe an musical instrament? what a crazy through...<<<

pavoroti, well any opera singer, anyone who has ever performed in a musical, any jazz singer, anyone who knows anything about music knows that singing can be just as a valid a form of musicianship than playing a musical instrument.....everyone stop being elitist, and there are some really talented rappers, who don't only talk about getting laid and the bling bling.....it's just a matter of keeping open.....

Like I said, I was mistaken, I make assumtions based on what I've heard... but then again, that would be all I am able to form an opinion on... I don't doubt there are some talented people of every genre, and then their are those whom make the stereotypes have proof.

I'm sorry for making my premature statement without really thinking, but I'd still say, in gernal and for the most part, you should be able to do more then just jump around on stage... lip sing, talk about drugs sexs, money and booze in music...

nah they were pop. just because pop today is considered britney-spears-nsync-no-imstruments-esque, doesnt mean a band cant be fully pop. they were mainstream and thats what pop is. you wouldnt call them rock.. that was more i guess along the lines of hendrix?

my *opinion* is that everything is reletive...the only people who should not be considered "artists" are people like milli vanilli....i also have a problem with some country acts because most of them tend to have their songs writen for them by people they may have never even met and their instruments played by a generic band...even that might be an ignorant statement and surely, that band and those song writers are artists....just not, usually it seems, those particular performers. christina aguilera is commercialized as all hell, but i have a hard time imagining anyone could argue that she has no talent...even britney, who most of us might see as completely ridiculous (even though i am strangely fascinated with her...) has written some of her own songs, and i'm sure that to her, those songs mean something...eminem might come off sounding immature and stupid to people who didn't grow up the way he did, but his lyrics are his art....they are the way he expresses his pain and his happiness...that's what makes art such a truly beautiful thing...if everyone understood everybody's art, how would any of it be special at all? my friend was in my car tonight and i was playing "three", and "on her way to boston" was on, but turned down low cuz we were talking....jeremy's sax solo came on and she goes, "oh my GOD! what is this? is this nine days? it sounds like porn music!"....so there you go.....clearly, i wanted to let her out and make her walk, and clearly, nine days is what i consider to be perfect art...but to her, it's just porno tunes...lol....

Beatles = the start of pop... but back then pop was short for POPULAR! (okay too much Vh1 for me...) So, pop could *really* be just about anything...

melissa, you missunderstood me yet again. the computer sucks that way. i just get a little miffed when artists are taken as pop icons, which i understood you to be saying... and now i guess aparently you were not... but thats what i was reading... i was just saying that music is way more than entertainment... and i dunno widening my scope on what music is? i don't think it can get any wider... i like every genre, its sometimes the specific artists are not my favorite because their message isn't down my ally. for instance, i don't enjoy white supremist ska, but i like ska.

and madonna was right about opera. they work their asses of to make their voice their instrument and its beautiful. (but then again i wouldn't exactly compare pavarotti to britney spears) but madonna did have a point that the human voice is an instrument.

and rachel is right christina has an amazing gift in her voice. granted if i was given that talent i might not have gone down the same road she has gone down, but she is still extremely talented.

wanna know a simple solution? dont watch tv. dont give a crap about the media...except music. if you live w/o music i will personally kill you. unless of course, you have a reason. then you live. smiling smiley but really, TV is evil...mtv is VERY evil...music television is EXTREMELY evil. americans do suck, tho. i agree on that one. (i know thats not exactly what you said, but im generalizing). im american too. but most of us suck. im done. ill wait for people to get pissed off now.
