OT: Words that mean other stuff in different languages

OT: Words that mean other stuff in different languages

Apparently "beer" means "bear" in Dutch...
"Gift" in German is "poison"

You know the drill... English word that when used abroad takes on a whole new meaning... see what amusing ones we can come up with

haha when we say rubber here we mean eraser for pencil

i am told however that rubber over there means condom

now i had an interesting conversation with rob thomas about how i had to go across the street and buy a rubber and it cost me like four bucks, what a rip off -

He was looking at me funny - and not until a few days later when i was telling an american friend about it did she go "clare do you know what a rubber is here?"

same day my friend was getting her picture taken with rob and she had like a massive zoom camera - and we were all like "dude look at your snazzy or spunky or something starting with s camera - which got a giant laugh from rob - which we understood later because that was an american word used for sperm, an interesting day all around!!

We use pissed to mean annoyed too, sometime, only we say pissed off or pissy.

What americans refer to as the subway, we call the tube, and a subway here you just walk through.

lift / escalator / elevator / something else

If somebody could put that into a sentance that'd be great

And yes, we say plasters. Once you get into US/UK, there are too many to list.

Travelator is one of the Transformers - the one who transforms from a humble suitcase into a twenty-three foot high tank of destruction.

Or so I presume.

"Bush" means "idiot" (or something of the sort) in Arabic.

Well, and in English now too. And French. And German.

And . ..

its pathetic how unorigional that is, upstge

I hate it when message boards become political. If you want to bash political figures, then go tell it to them and keep politics out of music boards. Otherwise keep it to yourself.
