Girl in California interpretation
I used to think that this song was just about adultery (grins), but today I thought maybe the the song is really about the conflict between music and love. Obviously, that was an issue in John's life at least in one point when Epic was making him do shows and it conflicted with a relationship with his current wife. So maybe the girl in California is actually the rockstar lifestyle instead of an actual girl. This helps explain the Hollywood references too.
Anyways, I may be reading way too much into this, and I don't wanna get into John's personal business, but I thought someone else might think it's a cool idea.
Lou still doesn't know any aspect of punctuation.

I think it's simply about a girl in California that he truly loved, but for some reason they never ended up together, instead he settled for his wife in New York (although he may love her greatly, it isn't the same as the girl in California)
I'm living a real life version of this song myself so it seems
That sounds like the anywhere story he tells during that missouri show.
---Anyone perfect must be lying, anything easy has its cost, Anyone plain can be lovely, anyone loved can be lost, What if I lost my direction? What if I lost sense of time? What if I nursed this infection? Maybe the worst is behind---
Madonna exists?
